How Do Earphones Work

Earphones works on the same principle as speakers. They convert electrical energy into sound by using magnets to pulsate air, which creates sound. Digital audio is collected in a device in the form of data- 1’s and 0’s. When you press the play button of your device, the 1’s and 0’s which represents the sampling of audio recorded in a microphone, are sent from digital to analog converter commonly known as DAC. DAC converts these 1’s and 0’s to electrical signals.

 

The Driver Unit

Once the electrical signal makes its way through the wires, into your headphones, it reaches the driver unit. Driver units are classified into 3 types: Dynamic Driver, Planar magnetic driver, and electrostatic driver. 

Dynamic Driver Unit:

The dynamic driver unit uses three main parts to work: a permanent magnet, electromagnetic coils, and a diaphragm. The magic of how headphones work mainly lies in the fact that they use magnets. 2 magnets in each earcup. One of the magnets is remaining firm on the spot hence it is permanent. The other one is an electromagnet, and it moves. When the electrical signal reaches your earcup, it’s sent to the electromagnet, which rapidly shifts its polarity back and forth depending on the pattern it’s sent, or the sounds being replicated. When the polarity of the electromagnet is switched, it is continuously repelled and attracted to the electromagnet and starts vibrating. These vibrating electromagnets are attached to a thin membrane called the diaphragm. The diaphragm vibrates when the electromagnet does, which causes the air around it to vibrate which is what we call sound. Different frequencies vibrate at different rates. So, when the electromagnet vibrates faster, it produces high tones and vibrates slower while producing slow tones. When you turn the volume up or down, the vibrations are intense, which causes the air to vibrate.


Planar Magnetic Driver Unit:

The Planar Magnetic Driver Unit works similarly to Dynamic driver unit, with just a few differences. Instead of using magnets to turn an electromagnetic coil, nevertheless, some exceedingly thin magnetic conductors, who are like tiny wires, are spread out across the diaphragm itself. Not only that, but instead of one single permanent magnet, a range of magnets is placed behind the diaphragm in order to help it properly to react when the electrical current is passed through the conductors. The polarity is changed when the electrical current passes through the conductors and the diaphragm work together with permanent magnets, vibrating and creating sound. 

 

Electrostatic Driver Unit:

The third driver unit is the electrostatic driver unit, which is accountable for some of the most well-respected headphones ever built. The only difference is, when it comes to electrostatic headphones, the moving magnets are replaced with the diaphragm which itself is a moving part. In electrostatic headphones, the diaphragm is made of very thin sheet, which is an electrically charged material, and it sits between two conductive plates. The electrically charged sheet moves back and forth, affecting the surrounding air and causing sound. Some people even recommend using electrostatic headphones.

How do Bluetooth headphones work?

There’s really not much different between normal wired headphones and wireless or Bluetooth headphones the process is almost exactly the same. The only difference is, as a substitute of being sent to a DAC within your phone or computer, the 1’s and 0’s are sent via a Bluetooth radio to a chip in your headphones, where they’re then sent to a DAC inside the headphones. The latter process is the same

Beyond standard headphones and wireless headphones, all headphones work fairly the same. Earbuds and in-ear headphones use exactly the same technology but on a much smaller scale.
